S1E13 - The Church and mental illness; creating safe communities

This week J.R. and Doug talk about ghosting aka people leaving your community poorly. We look at the hard reality of leaving and we talk about healthy ways to do so and how to have the conversation, We also are attaching a litany of farewell in the show notes. Check out the episode to hear all about it. J.R. and Doug have a second conversation with Dave Eckert about creating safe culture in our churches for people with mental illness. There are a ton of helpful tips in here for pastors to have a better understanding on what resources are out there for our churches to access. Take a look and check out the resources below.Resources:National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1.800.273.8255Montgomery County, PA Mobile Crisis Program (Access Services): 855.634.4673QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) / www.qprinstitute.comASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) / www.livingworks.netGiving and Taking Help by Alan Keith-LucasA Litany Of FarewellGood Christian people, I bid you now pray for the saving presence of our Living Lord:In this worldHe is risenIn this cityHe is risenIn this communityHe is risenIn the hearts of all faithful peopleHe is risenBut especially I bid you pray and give thanks now for __________ who is leaving our midst:For expectations not metLord, have mercyFor grievances not resolvedLord, have mercyFor wounds not healedLord, have mercyFor anger not dissolvedLord, have mercyFor gifts not givenLord, have mercyFor promises not keptLord, have mercyAnd also, for this portion of our pilgrimage in this place:Thanks be to GodFor friendships made, celebration enjoyed and for moments of nurtureThanks be to GodFor wounds healed, expectations met, gifts given, promises keptThanks be to GodFor bread and wine, body and bloodThanks be to GodFor all the thoughtful, little, unheralded things done to make the day nice for someoneThanks be to GodAnd so, to establish a home in another place with other members of the family of ChristGo in peaceTo continue the journey with new friends and new adventures, new gifts to give and to receiveGo in peaceTo offer wisdom and experience, competence and compassion, in the vocation to which you are calledGo in peaceWith whatever fears, whatever sadness, whatever excitement may be yoursGo in peaceWith our faith in you, our hope in you, and our love of youGo in peaceThe Lord watch between us while we are absent one from another in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.Go in peaceThe great give away, J.R. is giving away 25 copies of his book, Fail: Finding Hope and Grace in the Midst of Ministry Failure to the first 25 people who write a review on our itunes page. Giving and Taking Help by Alan Keith-Lucas

A Litany Of Farewell

Good Christian people, I bid you now pray for the saving presence of our Living Lord:

In this world

He is risen

In this city

He is risen

In this community

He is risen

In the hearts of all faithful people

He is risen

But especially I bid you pray and give thanks now for __________ who is leaving our midst:

For expectations not met

Lord, have mercy

For grievances not resolved

Lord, have mercy

For wounds not healed

Lord, have mercy

For anger not dissolved

Lord, have mercy

For gifts not given

Lord, have mercy

For promises not kept

Lord, have mercy

And also, for this portion of our pilgrimage in this place:

Thanks be to God

For friendships made, celebration enjoyed and for moments of nurture

Thanks be to God

For wounds healed, expectations met, gifts given, promises kept

Thanks be to God

For bread and wine, body and blood

Thanks be to God

For all the thoughtful, little, unheralded things done to make the day nice for someone

Thanks be to God

And so, to establish a home in another place with other members of the family of Christ

Go in peace

To continue the journey with new friends and new adventures, new gifts to give and to receive

Go in peace

To offer wisdom and experience, competence and compassion, in the vocation to which you are called

Go in peace

With whatever fears, whatever sadness, whatever excitement may be yours

Go in peace

With our faith in you, our hope in you, and our love of you

Go in peace

The Lord watch between us while we are absent one from another in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Go in peace
